Despite the strong wind on Saturday, during the annual Holly Jolly Days in downtown Midland, some shoppers were able to find gifts they didn't know they were looking for and those that were difficult to buy.

From free carriage rides to free hot chocolate, some shoppers feel nostalgic.

"It was a great contact," said Rebecca Haynes of Midland. "The horses, the fireplace outside and the hot chocolate make the atmosphere even higher."

In Heather'n Holly, shoppers like to look around while drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream.

"We have a lot of customers coming in today," said Bailey Bill, who works in a candy store.

Beers said: "It has been full of energy," and pointed out that customers have been wishing each other "Merry Christmas" and in a happy mood.

Holly Jolly Days is organized by the Downtown Development Authority and is composed of Ace Hardware & Sports, Midland Sports Rehab, Midland County Connection, Reder Landscape, Joyful Tantrum/Serendipity Road, Three Rivers Company, Everett Carpet & Flooring, Great Lakes Loons, and Valley Lanes/Guns .

The event was held on December 4, 5, 11 and 12. As part of Holly Jolly Days, there are holiday shopping discounts, holiday window displays and outdoor fireplaces. Free horse-drawn carriage rides from noon to 4 pm every day, starting in front of the H Hotel.

Haines said that her two daughters didn't like the shopping part of the trip, but they liked riding in the carriage.

"It just reminds you of a simpler era," she said of Main Street. "Or the time you imagine is simpler."

She said the only thing lacking was the perfect snow scene.

On Ashman Street near Main, the employees of WhichCraft Taproom said that Saturday brought considerable traffic during Holly Jolly Days.

The event helped to win support for some local enterprises. Felicia Johnson of Farwell said that she often wants to visit Serendipity Road. As this was one of the businesses promoted by Holly Jolly Days, she eventually entered the business.

"I found something I didn't know I needed," Johnson laughed.

She also likes the outdoor fireplace on the main street.

"It's nice to warm up between the shops," she said.
