The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) on Sunday urged the government to take specific measures to increase the country’s exports on the international market.

Carpet Training Institute (CTI) Chairman Parvez Hanif, PCMEA Group Head Abdul Latif Malik, Vice Chairman Ejaz-ur-Rehman, Senior Executive Members Riaz Ahmed and Saeed Khan told the media that Pakistan had previously earned millions of dollars from carpet exports . However, they asked the government to support all types of Pakistani handmade carpets exported to the world market.

They mentioned that PCMEA has long called for solving the problems of the carpet industry in order to increase its exports. "We hope that the government will play a key role in solving long-standing problems in the hand-cranked carpet industry," said the CTI chairman.

Pakistan's handmade carpet products have a unique identity in the world; therefore, despite the unfavorable conditions, manufacturers and exporters who have been working for decades still have an emotional attachment to it. "Although resources are scarce, our carpet exporters are taking every measure to compete with competitors, especially India," said Abdul Latif Malik.

PCMEA leaders said that the hand-cranked carpet industry can also provide people in rural areas with employment opportunities at their doorsteps. It urges the government to assign special tasks to all Pakistani embassies worldwide to help exporters promote "Made in Pakistan" products. They urged the government to appoint commercial counsellors in Pakistan’s missions abroad to help increase Pakistan’s exports.
